My medical background makes me unique to this field. As a registered nurse since 1981, working in all areas of Maternal Child Health, becoming a Doula was going back to the reason why I entered the medical profession in the first place: to nurture, support and understand the whole of each person, completing the circle and creating a feeling of safety in the family. My 30 years in both clinical and administrative nursing, have developed a strong professional foundation of the medical model and a deep understanding for the patient and their sense of vulnerability.
The two areas that have always held my interest in nursing were Maternal Child Health and Psychology. To have that knowledge base and apply it in a non-medical way just enhances the process and interaction with my clients.
